Higher rank in Google means that the website is highly relevant in terms of providing the information a visitor is seeking. What can you do to shave those precious milliseconds off your websites loading time? Here are some of the techniques used by web designers and developers (including us at Visualab Design) to decrease the loading time of your web pages.

Image Compression

According httparchive.org, 61% of a typical web page’s size is images. Images should be optimized using file formats such as PNG-8, JPEG or GIF. You should also try to match the size the image with the space it is taking up on the page. For example, you wouldn’t want to upload a huge 1920 X 800 pixel image if it will be displayed at a much lower size. If your images need to be rescaled that will slightly increase page load time.

Use a Caching Plugin

Browser caching plugins work by storing cached versions of static resources. This quickens page speed tremendously and reduces server lag. When a user visits a page on your website, the cached version will usually be served (unless it has changed since it was last cached). This reduces requests to your server and as a result makes your web page load faster. Most caching plugins also handle other techniques for speeding up your website such as minifying Javascript and CSS.

If you purchased a cheap hosting plan (I’m looking at you godaddy) this might be one of the biggest limiting factors to getting a fast loading website. On a typical shared hosting account, you might be sharing server space with hundreds of other websites. Using Sprite Sheets

For each images on your page, you are forcing multiple roundtrips of the server to get all the resources secured, which significantly slows down page speed. Sprite sheets are used to combine many images into one. The proper image segment can be displayed with CSS with the background-image and background-position properties.

Use GZIP compression

Using performance testing tools

Performance testing tools such as those listed below will test all aspects of a websites page speed optimization and give you actionable insights for improving the loading time of your web page. (pingdom pic)

Looking at the picture above we can see that overall the page speed of this website is very well optimized. However, there is one major area where can have significant improvement: Remove query strings from static resources. Clicking on the arrow to the right of it will reveal the details about this specific issue and how you can improve it.
